The site looks good, man! It's starting to look like Gabbert will ultimately be drafted #1 overall. Good call there. Love the ARI/Tyron Smith, DAL/Peterson trade scenario. VERY possible. A few nit-picks: JAX GM Gene Smith avoids "character risks" like the plague on draft day, so I can't see J. Smith on the Jag's board. He bombed in interviews at the Combine, & his stock is falling. They would opt for Brandon Harris should they go CB, IMO. Also, I don't think that MIA has the luxury of taking another 3-4 DE, with no 2nd rounder, so many glaring needs on offense (interior O-line/QB/fleet WR), and the solid cast of Langford/Soliai/Starks (Pro Bowl)/Merling already in the fold.
ReplyDeleteDuh. I forgot to include last year's #1 pick, Jared Odrick , in the MIA D-line list. D-line is probably their deepest position. They'll draft offense.
ReplyDeleteA hilarious quote from a scout at the Combine (that relates to our ongoing Mallett discussion):"He's not on our board. We want a QB who wants to be like Joe Montana, not Eminem." Awesome.
"He's not on our board...we want a qb who wants to be like Joe Montana, not Eminem"....I think that just sums it up...thats why he is going to be a perfect fit for the Bengals.
ReplyDeleteAbout Cameron Jordan going to the Dolphins...The Dolphins are the trickiest team to mock in this draft. If they address the RB position through free agency, which we both expect them to do, it is hard to gauge what they are going to do with that first round pick. For a run of the mill team, they actually don't have a lot of needs to fill. They might be the perfect candidate to trade back especially because they don't have that 2nd round pick. Their needs are at QB and Safety, both positions they would be better suited to address in the late 1st round or early 2nd. If they don't, don't be suprised if they take Jordan anyway. Langford and Starks are both expendable, and Soliai is a NT. Odrick cost them a lot and I expect him to start, but imagine their D-line with both of those guys at the DE spots and big Soliai at the nose...you won't be able to run on them, and then you have Cam Wake and Cam Jordan getting after QB from the inside and outside...pretty nasty
ReplyDeleteJimmy Smith is a bit of a character isn't he...I hear what your saying about the Jags front office, and they threw everyone for a loop when they took Aloua last year so who knows what they're capable of...I just feel that there is a pretty big disparity between Smith and Harris, starting mainly with size. If Smith can get his act together, he could end up being better than Amukamara...also, be careful with all the speculation about him bombing interviews...these GM's are crafty about starting rumors so these guys will slide down to them...the only concrete info I heard on Smith was that he is cocky and basically said that he already has "better ball skills than Asomugha".....hey, some of the best corners in NFL history were out of their mind cocky...(Deion Sanders) Hopefully for his sake he can back it up
ReplyDeleteI'm glad you like the site...I'm trying to get it out there. I feel like there is a lot of quality writing here, I just hope more people start interacting. I'm glad your still following it because you always have great stuff to contribute. As a Jets fan, you should check out the article comparing Sanchez to Freeman...you will find it interesting
ReplyDeleteThe Jimmy Smith speculation is straight from the horse's mouth. Smith HIMSELF, when asked by the media at the Combine if he discussed his criminal history with team interviewers, said, "We talked about my ONE arrest and failed drug test". The Boulder PD would beg to differ. He was arrested TWICE and failed TWO drug tests. The media, aware of these facts, egged him on, having him repeat the lie on a few occasions. So he lied to teams AND the media. Yeah, Smith has great "upside" (codeword for BUST), but why ZERO INTs last year? Why was he only voted HONORABLE MENTION BIG XII CB by league coaches? I'll take the well-rounded, productive, Jim Thorpe Award semifinalist (2 years in a row), coach's son in Brandon Harris any day. You can have Smith, and that extra 2 inches of height...Smith will join Andre Woolfolk,Usama Young, Reggie Smith, Chris Cook, Sean Smith, et al, in the TALL CB WHO WAS OVERVALUED BECAUSE OF HIS HEIGHT & TRIANGLE NUMBERS LEADING UP 'TIL THE DRAFT, BUT REALLY JUST WASN'T EVER THAT GOOD H.O.F.
ReplyDeleteThank you for clarifying...sounds like a potential disaster...Harris only had 3 picks his entire college career, but I feel that was more due to the fact that teams were afraid to throw to him. I believe the same was true for Smith, but you can't say you have elite ball skills and than pick off zero passes all year. I wouldn't put him in the same category as the other scrubs you listed quite yet, but I definitely agree that there are a multitude of red flags surrounding this kid. SO....let me ask you this...Hypothetical situation: Justin Houston is off the board, and so is Brandon Harris and Aaron Williams...Smith falls back to the end of the 1st round...."and with the 30th pick in the 2011 NFL Draft, the New York Jets select..."?
ReplyDeleteJimmy Smith! AHEAD of Aaron Williams. Don't think for I second that I haven't thought about the possibility of a CB with Kyle Wilson struggling miserably as a rookie, and Cromartie probably on his way out. Ryan needs those man-corners to make his scheme work, and I'm sure he'd have visions of Chris McAlister upon watching Smith's tape. It's not what I would do, but the Jets would grab him in a heartbeat. If the Jets did draft Smith, I wouldn't complain, because it would be a great VALUE. All of the mocks that I see with N.Y. taking someone like P. Taylor, C. Ballard, M. Wilkerson, even J. Sheard...ugh. It seems so "reachy" to me. Personally, I'd like to see them trade down, grab a few more picks, and grab a few "target" values like Kendrick Ellis, Chris Carter, and Jordan Todman.
ReplyDeleteAs for Harris, I know he wasn't a big INT guy (still more than Smith), but he did have 28 PBU (including 15 in '09, good for 2nd in the nation), & I think there's something to be said for making plays on the ball. At the Combine, Deion Sanders said that Harris was the best CB he saw out there (and that's including Patrick Peterson). I know that Deion won't be attending any MENSA meetings anytime soon, but he undeniably knows a thing-or-two about playing CB in the NFL.
I understand where you're coming from with the Cam Jordan/MIA pick. It just seems like overkill to me. Starks is a Pro Bowler, and Langford is a solid, young base end who led the NFL in batted passes and was 2nd in sacks for MIA. Nolan's defense ALREADY stops the run well. Stopping the run is fine and all, but if they don't find upgrades at QB/RB/WR/TE/C/OG, THEY WON'T SCORE ANY POINTS.
